Hapuka, squid, snapper and maybe kingfish....
Although it is the middle of winter and the weather has been very ordinary we are managing to get out there for the most part.
On nice days we have been heading out to the puka grounds and the fishing has been getting better and better each time. Some nice puka, bass, gemfish and even kingies coming up from the deep. Some days it is fast and furious, other days slower but still obtaining nice results.
Kingies are still proving a little harder than usual though a few are starting to show up on some large bait schools in the bay. Hopefully they will continue to come in as the weather has made it difficult to fish the deeper reefs lately.
Snapper fishing is at its usual winter stage with lots of pannies around with a few bigger ones among them. They are not hard on the bite and you need to be pretty focused to feel them, or the just eat your bait, which they are very good at anyway! They are either in shallow or out deep 50 meters or more. Problem in the deep is any under sized fish you want to return won’t survive due to barratruama.
Squid fishing is in full swing with the average size getting well up now. Some very nice ones are being caught around the area.
Good luck out there
